The cost of the exam generally ranges from KES 35,000 to KES 45,000, depending on the test type and the specific test provider. For example, through the British Council, the standard Academic or General Training test typically costs around KES 41,580, while the UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration) specialized test costs about KES 44,840.

To register and sit for the exam, Kenyan citizens must present a valid, original National Identity Card or a valid Passport. Non-Kenyan citizens are strictly required to present a valid Passport. Please note that student IDs, voter IDs, and driving licenses will not be accepted by test centers.

Official testing is administered primarily by the British Council . The British Council has test locations in Nairobi, Eldoret, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nyeri, Nakuru, Meru, Kisii and Kakamega

IELTS is not a standard “pass” or “fail” exam. Instead, your English proficiency is graded on a band scale from 0 to 9. Whether you “pass” or not depends entirely on the minimum band score required by the specific university, employer, or immigration body you are applying to.

Because there is no official fail grade, if you don’t meet the target band score for your institution, you can simply register to retake the entire exam. Alternatively, candidates can now utilize the “IELTS One Skill Retake” feature, which allows you to retake just one specific section (Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking) if you missed your target score in that single area.

There are no restrictions or limits on how many times you can take the IELTS exam. You are free to book and sit for the test as many times as you need to achieve your desired score.

However, formal preparation courses in Kenya typically run anywhere from 3 to 4 weeks depending on your initial proficiency level.
